Why We Exist

Our Mission

To equip young adults to successfully transition from college to the “real world” by focusing on finances and relationships. We model our business and teachings around Christian principles based on Scripture and the life of Jesus Christ.

Our Story

Shortly after graduating college in 2006, Justin Thomas remarked to friends that he felt he was “playing grownup” and felt unequipped for the huge jump from college dorm life to the cubicle world. After grasping the basics of 401k, health insurance, taxes, and finding a local church, Justin and his wife Amy knew this knowledge and practical experience needed to be shared with others and cofounded Playing Grownup as a 501(c)3 nonprofit in 2011. Here’s the rock star team that makes this mission happen.

Justin Thomas

President & Co-Founder

Justin started his Roth IRA at the age of 16 and got hooked on investing ever since. He has a business degree from Roanoke College, an MBA from the University College Dublin (Ireland). He stays busy with a variety of business ventures and being a husband and father. He enjoys fantasy football and has been a commissioner now for the majority of his life!

Amy Thomas

VP & Co-Founder

Amy started teaching at the age of 7 as soon as her little sister was born, and enjoys helping others get organized! Amy graduated with a business degree and a concentration in leadership from Roanoke College. She has professional experience in bookkeeping for small businesses and churches. Amy enjoys cooking and making her daughter laugh throughout the day.

Bomi Roberson

Board Member

Bomi has been developing, implementing, and expanding community outreach programs in the higher education and nonprofit sectors for 10+ years. She is a founding Board Member at Playing Grownup and assists in the strategic planning of the organization. Bomi graduated with a Communications degree from the University of North Carolina and has a Masters in Organizational Communication with a certificate in nonprofit management. She is a wife and mom who somehow manages to continue to prioritize people and organizations she cares deeply about.

Reggie Roberson

Board Member

Reggie has been in campus ministry for 15+ years and loves working with students. He has served as a founding Board Member of Playing Grownup since 2011 (along with his wife Bomi) and oversaw the launch of seminars at Duke University. Reggie graduated with a Psychology degree from the University of North Carolina and is part of the pastoral staff of Kings Park Church in Durham, NC. He is a proud husband and father and enjoys a game of pickup basketball whenever time permits!

John Thomas

John is an analytic thinker who enjoys contributing his web development skills to the Playing Grownup team. He oversees Playing Grownup’s digital presence and develops its web applications. John graduated with a Mechanical Engineering degree from Virginia Tech and completed an intensive fullstack web development course from Bloc. He enjoys working out, living in California with his wife Sophie (also a Playing Grownup member!) and trying to beat his older brother Justin in fantasy football.

Sophie Thomas

Copy Editor

Sophie has been writing and editing for as long as she can remember, and has an affinity for languages. Her editing eye seems to never shut off, which comes in handy for the Playing Grownup team! She went to Virginia Tech and double-majored in International Business and French, and just completed her graduate certificate in Academic Advising from Kansas State. (She likes school a little bit.) Last year, she wrote a very, very rough draft of her first novel! When she is not editing the Playing Grownup copy, you can find her drinking coffee, doing Zumba, or beating her husband in fantasy football.

Kayla Fuller

Millennial Expert

Kayla is a renaissance woman who has a variety of talents and experiences ranging from competing in a national wrestling competition to beauty pageants and graduating Summa Cum Laude from Roanoke College! As a recent graduate, Kayla uses her communications expertise to help keep us on the pulse of students by serving as our Millennial Expert. Kayla has a gift for connecting with people, building relationships, and serving others. We are delighted to have her on the Playing Grownup team!

How will I make new friends and connections?

Each year we award two scholarships to graduating seniors for "life after college" expenses. If you attended one of our seminars and are a senior in good standing we invite you to apply. Scholarships are named after the founders' grandfathers who are honored below.

HC Williamson Scholarship

The HC Williamson Scholarship is named after the late Mr. Williamson, a.k.a "Papaw," grandfather of Playing Grownup co-founder Amy Thomas. Papaw was larger than life as he enjoyed working on his farm in Southwest Virginia. He donated his time to the local community by faithfully serving on boards for businesses and churches. His legacy continues through his proud family and this scholarship.

HC Thomas Scholarship

The HC Thomas Scholarship is named after the late Mr. Thomas, grandfather of co-founder Justin Thomas. He enjoyed significant success as a furniture business entrepreneur and as an investor with a gift for picking stock investments. His hard-working personality was matched only by his generosity, love, and card playing skills. This scholarship is in honor of Grandad and his lasting legacy of investing into future generations.
